Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest trumpeters of all time (some say the best), Gillespie was a complex artist, while his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead of him, and it was not until well into their seventies the style Dizzy was successfully recreated.
Dizzy Gillespie was also instrumental in the creation of Afro-Cuban jazz (or Latin Jazz), adding Chano Pozo's conga to his orchestra in 1947, using complicated rhythms in that early period. Leader of two of the finest big band in jazz history, Gillespie was very different from his contemporaries because he was a masterful showman who could make his music was accessible and fun to your audience. With his puffy cheeks, his bent trumpet (which occurred by accident in the early 50's when a dancer tripped over his horn) and his incredibly quick intelligence, Dizzy was a colorful figure.
